The 270 hectares of the Selinunte archaeological park house the largest archaeological site in Europe. The most recent excavations have unearthed a city larger and older than even Pompeii. The architecture, artifacts, temples, and every other discovery in this vast area testify to important historical events that involved and disturbed the populations that inhabited it.
The Belice was the largest river in western Sicily and on its valley, there are villages belonging to three provinces (Agrigento, Palermo, and Trapani). As is known, it suffered the devastating effects of the 1968 earthquake, which brought down much of Sicilian Baroque.
However, the entire valley acquired an eerie charm after the catastrophic event due to the proximity of the ruins with the reconstructions, even if not always appropriate, and thanks to the supportive intervention of some artists who installed some of their works there.
