Gibellina

Gibellina

Its name in Arabic means small mountain. In fact, it was founded in the early Middle Ages by the Arabs on a small hill.

Today, Gibellina nuova and Gibellina Vecchia are distinguished, indicating the current inhabited center and the remains of the original city devastated by the earthquake of 1968.

On those remains, Alberto Burri produced the immense land art work known as the Cretto di Burri. In addition to him, other artists have used their mastery to lift the fortunes of this unfortunate valley, creating a veritable open-air museum.
